Lise Klaveness, president of the Norwegian Football Federation, announced Thursday that she will file a formal complaint with FIFA regarding the case of American player Folarin Balogun.

US President Donald Trump had called FIFA President Gianni Infantino of Switzerland during the recent World Cup held in the United States, Mexico, and Canada, demanding the cancellation of the suspension penalty received by the American striker after he received a red card in a previous match.

FIFA decided to lift the suspension on Balogun, but Infantino denied any connection to Trump's call. While most analysts agreed that the player's sending-off was harsh, the controversy that arose dominated the second half of the tournament.

Klaveness criticized FIFA officials in an interview with the British newspaper The Times, accusing them of trying to cover up the case, and called on Infantino to admit that the decision to lift Balogun's suspension was a mistake.

Klaveness is known for her ongoing criticism of FIFA and Infantino, who enjoys wide popularity outside Europe, especially after his decision to expand the men's World Cup to 48 teams. He is widely expected to win a new term as president of the world's most popular sport next year.
