(CNN)-- The International Federation of Association Football (FIFA) announced Monday that the 2026 edition recorded the highest attendance in the history of the World Cup.

FIFA said the total attendance in the last World Cup reached 6,810,966 spectators, surpassing the 1994 World Cup in the US (3,587,538 spectators) and the 2014 World Cup in Brazil (3,429,873 spectators).

The 2026 edition saw the participation of 48 teams for the first time, leading to an increase in the number of matches to 104.

The Spanish national team clinched the title of the tournament, which was held in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

The 'Matador' team won the title for the second time in its history after defeating Argentina 1-0 at MetLife Stadium on Sunday.
