The historic Bordeaux club, which played in the fourth division in the last two years, has been excluded from national competitions, and will play next season in the sixth division at best, according to the financial watchdog of French football announced Wednesday. Late last month, Bordeaux announced its relegation to the fifth division by a decision of the financial watchdog, due to its financial deficit, affirming its intention to appeal the decision. But it failed in the appeal it filed, leading not only to its demotion to the fifth division but now to the sixth. The club, which has won the French league title six times, the last in 2009, but dropped to the fourth division, and its Spanish-Luxembourgish owner Gérard Lopez, failed to cover a financial deficit of $10.3 million. Since April, the club has been in talks with the British company 'Sparta Capital' regarding its acquisition, hoping to secure $10 million to help finance the new season. But by the time of the appeal decision, it was unable to secure the necessary amount to cover its deficit for the 2025-2026 season and finance the 2026-2027 season. Bordeaux dropped from the second division to the fourth in 2024 after declaring bankruptcy, becoming an amateur club for the first time in about 90 years. The club has seen great stars such as Zinedine Zidane, Jean Tigana, and Bixente Lizarazu.
