French club Racing Strasbourg announced on Monday the appointment of Portuguese Hugo Oliveira as the new head coach of the first football team. The Portuguese coach replaces Gary O'Neill, who led Strasbourg to eighth place in Ligue 1 and the semi-finals of the UEFA Europa Conference League, before returning to England to coach Ipswich Town. Oliveira comes from Famalicão, a competitor in the Portuguese Primeira Liga, whom he led to fifth place last season. Before taking charge at Famalicão, Oliveira spent seven years in the English Premier League, as part of the coaching staff of his compatriot Marco Silva, at Fulham, Everton, Hull City, and Watford. Oliveira, 47, worked as a goalkeeping coach for the Portuguese national team between 2009 and 2011, and held the same position at Benfica between 2011 and 2016. Strasbourg will start their Ligue 1 season with a match against Olympique Marseille on August 21.
