Officially: Mbappé becomes all-time top scorer in World Cup, Messi runner-up
French star Kylian Mbappé succeeded in finding the net against England during the match between the two teams to decide the third-place winner in the 2026 World Cup.
After trailing 4-0 in the first half, Mbappé reduced the deficit by scoring the first goal for Les Bleus in the 48th minute.
Bradley Barcola scored the second goal, before Mbappé returned to score his second personal goal and the third for Les Bleus in the 66th minute.
Kylian Mbappé raised his tally to 10 goals, topping the scoring charts of the 2026 World Cup, two goals ahead of his closest rival Lionel Messi.
Stats Foot network reported that Mbappé became the first player to score 10 goals in a single World Cup edition since German legend Gerd Müller, who scored the same number in the 1970 World Cup.
It added: "Mbappé became the all-time top scorer in World Cup history with 22 goals, surpassing the record held by Lionel Messi, who scored 21 goals."
It clarified: "This achievement also takes us back to 1970, the last time a French player topped the tournament's scoring list, when Just Fontaine scored 13 goals."
Stats Foot added: "Mbappé has scored 16 goals for the French national team this season, setting a new record as the highest scorer for the French national team in a single season, surpassing Just Fontaine who scored 14 goals in the 1957-1958 season."
