One Card Every 20 Fouls: Are Referees Favoring Argentina in the 2026 World Cup?
The Egyptian national team sparked controversy regarding the Argentine team, following their loss to them in the 2026 World Cup.
Egypt bid farewell to the 2026 World Cup in the round of 16 after losing to Argentina 2-3 on Tuesday (day before yesterday) at the Atlanta stadium, having been ahead 2-0.
After the match, Egypt's head coach Hossam Hassan and player Mostafa Ziko criticized French referee François Letexier and FIFA, accusing them of favoring Argentina.
The British newspaper 'The Sun' prepared a report on this matter, regarding the number of cards each team receives relative to the number of fouls committed, with Argentina being the second-lowest in that list.
Argentina received only 3 cards after 5 matches in the 2026 World Cup, despite committing 59 fouls, at a rate of one card every 19.6 fouls.
Only Norway surpasses the 'Tango dancers', having received just 2 cards so far, despite committing 48 fouls, at a rate of one card every 24 fouls.
It is worth noting that Argentina is the defending World Cup champion from the 2022 edition held in Qatar, which was the third time they won the title, after the 1978 and 1986 editions.
