Painful blow for the Three Lions ahead of Norway clash
English defender Jarrell Quansah has been handed a two-match suspension following the red card he received during his country's 3-2 victory over Mexico in the World Cup round of 16.
England, led by coach Thomas Tuchel, are preparing to face Norway next Sunday in the World Cup quarter-finals.
The Athletic published a FIFA statement confirming that Quansah will not only miss the Norway match but will also be absent from the semi-final should England advance.
The FIFA statement read: 'The suspension will be served in the next match or matches of the England team at the 2026 World Cup, in accordance with Article 69 of the FIFA Disciplinary Code.'
The 2026 World Cup regulations do not include any mechanism for teams to appeal red cards. However, the English Football Association was studying the available options regarding the sanction. The FA also does not have the right to appeal a two-match suspension, as it was issued by FIFA's independent disciplinary committee.
Sources familiar with the proceedings told The Athletic that the FA was heavily involved in discussions on the case, stressing its belief that the Video Assistant Referee protocol was not applied correctly.
The sources added that the FA attempted to have the fact that a still image was shown to the referee first before resorting to video replay considered as a mitigating factor. The laws of the game stipulate that clips must first be shown at normal speed, while still images should only be used to determine the point of contact.
Despite this, the FA ultimately expected a two-match suspension to be issued in accordance with FIFA's general disciplinary regulations.
