Previous incident raises concerns: Could several Argentine players miss the final due to suspension?
A press report said on Thursday that it is possible that several Argentine players could miss the World Cup final against Spain next Sunday.
The newspaper 'As' explained that several Argentine players raising a political banner referring to the sovereignty of the Falkland Islands could lead to disciplinary sanctions against all of them, according to the disciplinary code.
Moreover, given similar precedents, some of them could be prevented from participating in the final match.
An example is South Korean player Park Jong-woo, who was suspended for two matches for doing exactly the same thing at the London Olympics.
After their victory over Japan in the third-place match, he raised a banner with a political slogan concerning the Liancourt Rocks, known as Dokdo or Tokto, or Takeshima in Japanese.
As a result, and because it was Korea's last match of the tournament, the FIFA Disciplinary Committee excluded him from the medal ceremony, and unlike his 17 teammates, he did not receive the bronze medal at that time.
Moreover, months later, he was suspended from all international competitions for two matches.
The International Federation of Association Football (FIFA) prohibits political messages in stadiums according to its disciplinary rules and the regulations of the International Football Association Board (IFAB).
The Argentine Football Association was also fined in 2014 for a banner that read 'Falkland Islands are Argentine'.
This case is likely to lead to an investigation by FIFA, and imposing a fine on the Argentine federation is almost certain, while sanctions against the players are possible, though less likely due to time constraints and the large number of players who carried the banner.
