The world's eyes turn on Sunday to the 2026 World Cup final between the two top-ranked teams in the FIFA rankings: Spain, the European champions, and Argentina, the reigning world champions, in a match that reflects two different schools of success.

According to Spanish newspaper Marca, the Spanish team, led by coach Luis de la Fuente, relies on a young generation, technical dominance, and a squad with the highest market value in the world, while Argentina, under Lionel Scaloni, bets on experience, champion character, and the influence of its captain Lionel Messi, who remains the most prominent factor on and off the pitch.

The two teams' arrival at the final was not surprising, as they entered the tournament ranked first and second in the FIFA World Rankings, before affirming their standing on the pitch. Both teams maintained unbeaten records, although each took a different path to the final, whether technically, economically, or in terms of fan support.

Data from Football Benchmark reveals a significant gap in market value between the two teams. Spain's squad is valued at around €1.47 billion, compared to €818 million for Argentina, meaning the Spanish team's value is about 80% higher than the defending champions.

A large part of this difference is due to young star Lamine Yamal, who is currently the highest market value player in the world, estimated at around €292.2 million. Spain also stands out for its low average age of 26.7 years, compared to 29.1 for Argentina, which is one of the most experienced teams in the tournament.

Spain's dominance also appears in a theoretical lineup based on player market values, which includes seven players from Spain, with a total value exceeding €1 billion, led by Lamine Yamal, along with Pedri (€139 million) and Pau Cubarsí (€110 million). In contrast, Enzo Fernández tops the list of Argentine players with a value of €104 million, followed by Julián Álvarez with €88 million.

Despite the economic gap, Argentina clearly excels in fan and media influence, as the total Instagram followers of its players amount to around 667 million, compared to just 140 million for Spain's players.

Most of this advantage is due to Lionel Messi, whose followers exceed 512 million, making him the most influential figure in world football, even as he approaches the end of his international career.

Argentina's fan presence was also reflected in its official accounts during the tournament. The official account gained about 2.4 million followers between June 11 and July 14, a growth rate of 16.2%, while Spain added about half a million followers, a growth rate of 6.7%.

Argentina's superiority also extends to the fastest-growing stars on social media. The five fastest-growing players on the team gained 11.8 million new followers during the tournament, more than double the 5.6 million gained by the top five Spanish players.

Messi led the way, adding six million new followers, followed by Julián Álvarez, Emiliano Martínez, Leandro Paredes, and Lisandro Martínez, all of whom surpassed the one-million mark during the tournament.

On the physical front, fatigue levels could play a decisive role in the final, given the intense pressure of consecutive matches.

Argentine goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez tops the list of most minutes played among the finalists, having played all 795 minutes without missing a single minute in his team's campaign.

He is followed by Alexis Mac Allister with 730 minutes, while the list includes five Spanish players among the most used: Marc Cucurella, Unai Simón, Pau Cubarsí, as well as Aymeric Laporte and Rodri, all of whom have exceeded 700 minutes.

This physical strain also worries European clubs, as the 2026-2027 season starts in less than a month, meaning that many stars from both teams will return to their clubs without adequate preparation.

But all these numbers will lose their value once the opening whistle blows. Spain enters the final with the highest market value squad, one of the strongest defenses in the tournament, along with exceptional talent in Lamine Yamal, who is considered the future of world football.

Argentina, on the other hand, enters the match as the world champions, boasting the strongest attack in the tournament, and relying on the experience of Lionel Messi, who continues to defy time and exceed all expectations.

Numbers may outline the contours of the match, but they will not decide its outcome. As always, the real decision is made on the pitch.
