The Mexican Football Federation announced on Wednesday the appointment of Rafael Márquez as head coach of the senior national team until 2030, replacing Javier Aguirre, as part of preparations for the upcoming World Cup.

In an official statement, the federation explained that the appointment of Márquez, 47, is part of an organized transition plan aimed at ensuring continuity, fostering talent development, and preparing for future commitments.

Background of the appointment and Márquez's career

The statement noted that Márquez served as Aguirre's assistant since August 2024, remaining in that role until Mexico's elimination in the round of 16 of the last tournament, after a 2-3 loss to England.

The federation added that the succession plan for Márquez to replace Aguirre had been in place since 2024, despite recent rumors that the federation was searching for a new coach.

Start of the new journey

In this context, Márquez is expected to lead the team for the first time during the international break scheduled for late September and early October, as no matches are currently scheduled for the Mexican national team.
