(CNN) Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan made a point of sending a congratulatory message to the Spanish national team after they won the 2026 World Cup.

The "Matador" team clinched the World Cup title for the second time in its history, after defeating Argentina 1-0 in the final match held at MetLife Stadium on Sunday.

Erdogan wrote on his official social media accounts on Monday night: 'I wholeheartedly congratulate the Spanish national team on winning the 2026 World Cup.'

The Turkish president added: 'On behalf of my country and my people, I send my greetings and love to the friendly Spanish people.'

It is worth noting that Turkey was among the first teams to exit the tournament, which was hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico, as they were eliminated in the group stage.

Turkey achieved one win against co-host the United States with a score of 3-2, while losing to Australia by two goals and to Paraguay by one goal.
