(CNN) -- Egypt defeated Australia 4-2 on penalties after a 1-1 draw at the end of regular and extra time, in a match held at Dallas Stadium on Friday, as part of the Round of 32 of the 2026 World Cup. The 'Pharaohs' took the lead first through their player Emam Ashour with a header in the 13th minute. The Australian 'Socceroos' scored the equalizer by an error from an opposing player in the 55th minute, leading to two extra time periods. The draw continued between the two teams until the 120th minute, before resorting to penalty kicks, which ultimately smiled upon Egypt. The 'Pharaohs' advanced to the Round of 16, while Australia exited the World Cup being held on the territories of the United States, Canada, and Mexico. This is the first time that the Egyptian national team has reached the Round of 16 in the history of its participation in the biggest world tournament.
