(CNN) – Argentina national team player Rodrigo De Paul sent a message to Argentine fans after losing the 2026 World Cup final, pointing out that there were 'those who were spreading conspiracy theories' against the 'Tango' team throughout the tournament.

De Paul wrote on his Instagram page: 'The deepest pain stems from the inability to bring the World Cup back to our country once again; if anyone deserved to live that moment again, it is you.'

The Argentine midfielder continued, saying: 'But over time, I realize that the bond that unites us with this team goes far beyond the cup itself, and that is what I hold on to to overcome this moment.'

De Paul added: 'Look today at the numbers of those who awaited this stumble, and spread baseless conspiracy theories throughout the tournament just to ease their pain for not being able to live what we Argentines lived; our smiles bother them, our nature angers them... Yet all that only increased our certainty that passion and love for our team's jersey can overcome anything.'

The Inter Miami and Argentina national team player concluded his message by saying: 'The pain will remain for a long time, but today more than ever I am proud to be Argentine.'

The matches of the Argentine national team in this tournament were accompanied by widespread controversy due to some refereeing decisions that were considered 'in their favor,' and some theories with no evidence emerged based on that.
