Sudden Shift: Why Postecoglou Snatched Al-Nassr's Seat from Martinez's Grip?
Media reports have revealed why Al-Nassr club backed out of signing Spanish Roberto Martinez, coach of Portugal, and opted for Australian coach Ange Postecoglou.
Al-Nassr announced on Friday the appointment of Postecoglou as head coach, replacing Portuguese manager Jorge Jesus, on a two-year deal until 2028.
The official announcement shocked everyone, especially since Postecoglou's name had not been circulated in the media in recent hours, while all speculation confirmed that Roberto Martinez would be the next coach of Al-Nassr.
According to Saudi newspaper Asharq Al-Awsat, this shift occurred only in the last 72 hours, during which negotiations began with Postecoglou to lead the team next season.
The paper explained that Martinez was indeed the candidate to lead the team, before Al-Nassr's administration backed away due to the Spanish coach's excessive financial demands, lacking a huge budget to meet his requests.
Portuguese Jose Semedo, Al-Nassr's CEO, and his compatriot Simao Coutinho, sports director, proposed some alternative names, but they did not impress the club's administration, especially financially.
The administration ultimately settled on signing Postecoglou, as he was the most suitable financially, with his demands aligning with the club's budget.
