Javier Tebas, president of the Spanish League, accused FIFA of destroying the football industry by expanding international competitions at the expense of domestic leagues and clubs. Tebas has repeatedly criticized FIFA for the congested match schedule and plans to expand the World Cup, and called on FIFA president Gianni Infantino to resign. In an interview with Italian newspaper La Gazzetta dello Sport, Tebas responded to a question about whether Infantino should resign, saying: 'In my opinion, yes, I think his time is up.' Infantino announced last April that he would seek re-election for a fourth term as president, with elections for the 2027-2031 term scheduled to take place in Morocco on March 18 next year. In response to questions about growing criticism of Infantino's leadership, Tebas said the FIFA president still enjoys strong support from national federations despite widespread concerns within the football community. He explained: 'He should not stay, but the current situation means he will not leave. There is no opposing candidate, no one wants to run and lose. This is the system, and it is fundamentally flawed.' He added: 'I have heard many voices opposing Infantino, who disagree with what he is doing. They say so, but ultimately they do nothing.' Tebas also questioned FIFA's decision to suspend the one-match ban imposed on American striker Folarin Balogun after he received a red card during the World Cup, following intervention by US President Donald Trump. He said: 'Suspending the American player's punishment is a very serious matter. They were lucky that Belgium eliminated the US from the tournament, otherwise a case could have arisen that might have cost Infantino his position, but these things are just the tip of the iceberg.'
