The Executive Board of the International Table Tennis Federation announced on Monday the restoration of permission for Russian athletes to compete in international tournaments starting July 28, a step similar to that previously taken for players from Belarus. In a press release, federation officials clarified that the decision does not override visa restrictions, local laws, or sanctions against regimes, nor does it affect the powers of the International Olympic Committee regarding national flags, anthems, and symbols. The decision covers individual and team events in ITTF tournaments and para-table tennis competitions, in line with the IOC decision last Tuesday to lift the suspension of the Russian Olympic Committee.

This decision comes in the context of a gradual easing of sports sanctions imposed on Russia since the onset of the conflict in Ukraine.

The ITTF's decision reflects a general trend in some international sports bodies to reintegrate Russian athletes while retaining some symbolic restrictions. The decision is expected to spark debate over its compatibility with Olympic principles amid continued Western sanctions on Russia. The role of the IOC remains central in determining the general framework for Russian athletes' participation in future Olympic Games.
