Norwegian Søren Wærenskjold, rider of team Uno-X, won the 11th stage of the Tour de France, covering 161.3 km between Vichy and Nevers, after overcoming his competitors with the final sprint in the fastest stage in the race's history, with an average speed of 50.91 km/h. The 26-year-old Norwegian finished the flat stage in a time of 3:10:06 hours, ahead of Dutchman Olav Kooij and Belgian Milan Fretin. The previous record for the fastest road stage, i.e. outside time trials, dates back to 1999 (50.36 km/h, between Laval and Blois, when Italian Mario Cipollini won the stage). Although he finished third at the finish line, Belgian Jasper Philipsen was demoted in the standings, allowing his compatriot Fretin to step onto the podium. After a quiet day for the overall leaders, Slovenian Tadej Pogačar, the defending champion, retained the yellow jersey, leading Danish Jonas Vingegaard by three minutes and 36 seconds, and Belgian Remco Evenepoel by four minutes and six seconds. This victory is Wærenskjold's first in the Tour de France and the second for his team, following the win by his compatriot Jonas Abrahamsen in last year's stage 11 as well.
