Dutchman Mark van Bommel has entered the list of candidates to lead the coaching staff of the Belgian national football team, succeeding Frenchman Rudy Garcia, according to local media reports on Wednesday. The Belgian Football Association reached an agreement with the 49-year-old Dutch coach. According to the Belgian daily 'Het Laatste Nieuws', the former coach of PSV Eindhoven, Wolfsburg, and Antwerp will sign a contract in the coming days tying him to Belgium until the end of Euro 2028. The Belgian FA announced on Monday that Garcia's contract, who took charge of the 'Red Devils' at the start of 2025, will not be extended despite the good performance of Belgium in the recent World Cup in North America. Kevin De Bruyne and his teammates reached the quarter-finals before being eliminated with a 1-2 loss to Spain, who later won the title. Local media indicated a divergence of views between the French coach and a number of players, as well as with technical director Vincent Mannaert, who was not satisfied with his country's performance during the group stage of the World Cup, especially in the matches against Egypt (1-1) and Iran (0-0). However, Garcia's departure caused surprise among many fans, who expressed their stance heavily on social media. According to 'Het Laatste Nieuws', the Belgian FA was looking for a 'younger and more modern national team coach than Rudy Garcia (62 years old).' Van Bommel has been without a club since leaving Antwerp in the summer of 2024.
