Video.. Refereeing expert drops bombshell: England vs Norway match should be replayed in this case
A refereeing expert confirmed that the Norway vs England match in the 2026 World Cup quarter-finals should be replayed if something that happened during the encounter is confirmed.
Norway players protested to French referee Clément Turpin after Jude Bellingham's goal in stoppage time of the first half, which gave England a 1-1 equalizer at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami.
Footage of the goal kick taken by goalkeeper Ørjan Nyland, from which the play leading to Bellingham's goal began, showed that the ball's trajectory seemed to suddenly change before landing in the path of England midfielder Elliott Anderson.
According to the laws of the game, this should have led to a stoppage of play and a drop ball restart, but FIFA clarified in an official statement that a sensor embedded inside the ball — the same technology used to disallow a goal in Croatia's loss to Portugal earlier in the tournament's knockout stages — showed no indication of the ball hitting the wire.
For his part, refereeing expert Fahad Al Mirdasi said in televised statements: "FIFA clarified in its statement that the ball sensor in Bellingham's goal against Norway did not detect any touch of the wire.. but if there is a malfunction in this sensor, the match must be replayed."
He added: "This is a difficult situation we don't want to see in any match, but if the sensor is faulty, the match must be replayed."
