White House reveals whether Trump will attend 2026 World Cup final
(CNN) -- The White House announced in a press conference held Thursday that US President Donald Trump will attend the World Cup final on Sunday, concluding a weekend full of tournament-related events.
The US president will first travel to New York City on Friday to attend a reception hosted by the International Federation of Association Football (FIFA) at Trump Tower, before attending the tournament final between Spain and Argentina at MetLife Stadium on Sunday.
White House spokesperson Karoline Leavitt stated during her first press briefing since returning from maternity leave that 'the president will travel Friday to New York City to attend a reception hosted by FIFA at Trump Tower, and on Sunday, he will attend a World Cup match between Spain and Argentina.'
Leavitt added: 'His attendance will crown the most-watched, safest, and most successful World Cup in US history.'
Argentina qualified for the World Cup final for the second consecutive time after scoring two late goals to defeat England 2-1. Spain secured their place in the final by beating France 2-0, setting up a Sunday final against 'La Albiceleste.'
Trump has drawn attention throughout the tournament for his involvement in World Cup events and stories; for example, he stated that he personally asked FIFA President Gianni Infantino to reconsider the suspension of US player Folarin Balogun after he received a red card in his country's match against Bosnia.
