Without Paying Release Clause, Celtic Insists on Egypt's New Star
Scottish club Celtic is confident it can secure the deal for Egyptian winger Haitham Hassan, who shone against Argentina in the round of 16 of the FIFA World Cup, for less than the release clause in his contract with Spanish club Real Oviedo, according to Football Insider website published Sunday. The British site reported that Celtic aims to sign the player for less than £10 million to his club, which has a contract with him until next summer. The contract includes a release clause of £16 million, but the figure dropped to £10 million after Real Oviedo's first team was relegated to the Spanish second division at the end of last season. According to Football Insider, Celtic, who are preparing for the qualifying rounds for the UEFA Champions League, are confident they can sign Hassan without meeting all of the Spanish club's financial demands. The site suggests that Oviedo may be forced to sell the player's contract, given that only one season remains on it. The efforts of clubs interested in the Egyptian winger, who created a goal in two matches during the World Cup, clash with his club's announcement days ago, through its new sporting director David Fernández, that the management will adopt a strict policy regarding player contracts and departures, and will not sell a contract except on its terms. According to media reports, the club insists on obtaining the full release clause to agree to the departure of the 24-year-old Egyptian. Other reports indicated interest from French club Marseille in the same player, and Oviedo rejected an initial offer from Celtic worth £3.4 million. Reports also stated that Hassan's former club Villarreal holds a percentage of up to 40% of the proceeds from the sale of his current contract. Egyptian national team officials convinced the player, who was born in France to an Egyptian father and Tunisian mother, to represent the Pharaohs. The player represented France's U17 and U18 teams, and the Tunisian national team tried to convince him to join them, but he preferred his father's country. The young winger showcased his individual skills against Argentina on Tuesday in the round of 16 of the World Cup, dribbling past several players before contributing to a goal that was disallowed by the referee. Later, he created another goal that counted, but La Albiceleste overturned a surprise 2-0 deficit to win 3-2 narrowly in the final minutes. Egyptian coach Hossam Hassan revealed in a television interview on Saturday that he excluded the Real Oviedo winger from the Pharaohs' first three matches in the tournament due to administrative procedures related to his documents at FIFA. In response to a question during the same television interview on Saturday, Haitham Hassan stated that he is taking his time and prefers to rest after a long season before deciding his next career move.
