World Champion's Advice: Cucurella Buries Coin in World Cup Final Pitch
Spanish left-back Marc Cucurella, who recently joined Real Madrid, carried out a request from Juan Capdevila, who was a world champion with La Roja in 2010, just before the start of the 2026 World Cup final.
The Spanish national team was crowned world champions yesterday, Sunday, after defeating Argentina 1-0 in the final, which went into extra time.
French network Foot Mercato reported that Cucurella revived a famous ritual in Spanish football by following Capdevila's request: burying a coin in the turf of MetLife Stadium minutes before kickoff against Argentina.
It added that, just as happened when Spain beat the Netherlands 1-0 in extra time in the 2010 final, this gesture proved to be a good omen for La Roja.
It is noted that Real Madrid officially announced the signing of Cucurella from Chelsea before Spain's campaign in the 2026 World Cup began.
