World Champions Ignite Madrid: Million Crowds Adorn Capital's Streets
Around one million fans gathered in the streets of the Spanish capital Madrid to welcome the Spain national team, champion of the 2026 World Cup, in a historic scene following the delegation's return from the United States, after defeating Argentina 1-0 in the World Cup final.
A celebratory parade tours the capital
The open-top bus carrying the Spanish national team players toured the streets of central Madrid, starting from the vicinity of the government headquarters and ending at the famous Plaza de Cibeles, which is the traditional destination for celebrations by fans of the Spanish team.
Francisco Martín, the central government's representative in Madrid, told Spanish state television that the parade set off amid a great festive atmosphere to Plaza de Cibeles, where Spanish fans are accustomed to celebrating their national team's achievements.
One million fans and heavy security
Martín estimated the number of fans lining the parade route at around one million people, while the celebrations were accompanied by an extensive security plan involving 2,050 police officers, in addition to 400 Civil Guard members, to secure the parade route.
Earlier, King Felipe VI received the 2026 World Cup champions on Monday at the Zarzuela Palace on the outskirts of Madrid, after the team delegation arrived from the United States, following their world title victory over Argentina 1-0 in the final.
