China competes with US in producing fifth-generation fighter jets
China has entered the fierce competition with the United States regarding the production of fifth-generation fighter jets.
China plans to produce 400 J-20 stealth fighters annually by 2027, a rate double that of US company Lockheed Martin's production of F-35 fighters, according to Al-Sharq.
Despite American superiority in producing these types of fighters, the Chinese J-20, nicknamed the "Mighty Dragon", is the second most produced fifth-generation fighter in the world. Since entering service in 2017, Chengdu Aircraft Industry Group has built about 500 of this model, a number exceeding the total of US F-22 Raptors (187 aircraft) and Russian Su-57 Felons (about 45 aircraft).
Forecasts indicate that China will have more J-20 fighters than the number of F-35 fighters in service with the US armed forces by 2030.
China currently operates at least 500 J-20 fighters, all within the air force, as the aircraft's size does not allow it to operate from aircraft carriers, a role reserved for the J-35 fighter.
