IAEA Director: No Global Oversight for Artificial Intelligence
Rafael Grossi, Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency, expressed skepticism about the possibility of imposing global oversight on artificial intelligence, in remarks to the Russian news agency 'Novosti'.
Grossi said: 'I am not among those who support what some call the management of artificial intelligence. The algorithmic system is extremely complex, and it is impossible to monitor what is happening in Russia, China, and the United States. How can all of that be brought under one framework and claim to manage it?' He added: 'There is a need for a practical approach based on a set of common standards.'
He concluded: 'It is also important to cooperate with companies. Just as we work with the Russian state nuclear corporation Rosatom, we should cooperate with the companies leading technological development, in order to provide a minimum of guarantees. In general, I am optimistic about artificial intelligence.'
