Mawhiba Students Work on Designing a Robot that Recites the Saudi National Anthem and the 'Spike Prime' Robot
The King Abdulaziz and His Companions Foundation for Giftedness and Creativity (Mawhiba) is organizing the Mawhiba Summer Enrichment Program 2026, which includes a variety of units, among them the robotics unit, held and implemented at Manarat Al-Riyadh Schools.
In this unit, students designed robots that recite the national anthem and other new ideas. Therefore, the robotics unit trainer, Othman Sahalul, said: 'Students learn in the robotics unit the proper engineering design of robots and how to deal with sensors, motors, and gears, so that the robot performs the required tasks, as well as training on creating flowcharts and programming robot devices.'
He pointed out that over the past few days, students were introduced to new versions of robots, and we provided a detailed explanation of the EV3 robot, through which students learned about types of motors and sensors. Then we detailed the mechanism of each sensor, starting with the color sensor, then the touch sensor, then the ultrasonic sensor, then the gyro sensor.
Othman added that the students carried out practical applied projects for each sensor. Using the color sensor, students implemented a robot that moves according to colors, preventing the robot from leaving the frame, for example, the black color assigned to it. They also implemented a robot that reads and recites the Saudi national anthem when it detects the color green.
Students also designed a vehicle that relies on the touch sensor: when it touches any obstacle, it moves back and turns around. Using the distance sensor, it reads the distance between itself and any obstacle in its path and avoids the obstacle by turning around it. They also used the gyro sensor for balance.
Othman confirmed that another group of students designed a robot that moves in a square shape at a 90-degree angle.
Regarding the students' impressions of this unit, Othman said that the students are very excited and passionate about learning more. They will start, God willing, in the coming days, training on the Spike Prime robot as well as a robot that assembles cubes.
Meanwhile, the supervisor of the Mawhiba Summer Enrichment Program, Ibrahim Al-Shamrani, stated: 'Mawhiba students are selected for the program based on passing the intelligence scale and the Mawhiba test conducted by the King Abdulaziz and His Companions Foundation for Giftedness and Creativity, according to their scores and interests; each student chooses the unit suitable for him.'
He added that this unit aims to teach gifted students enrolled in it the principles of assembling and programming the educational robot, and to broaden the students' mental and cognitive horizons. He stated that the number of students participating in the robotics unit is 25.
