Yesterday, Google held a short conference where it announced its new phones alongside some new features for its leading services. It announced that the Recorder app on its Pixel phones now supports unique audio editing, and also announced the availability of a new photo editor for its Google Photos app on Android, fully based on machine learning.

The first thing you'll notice in this version is the disappearance of the icon-based section bar at the bottom, making way for a set of text-based editing options that mimic most of the old features.

You can still access crop, filters, and adjustments tools, but with a different layout. Instead of a vertical list of exposure, contrast, and other options, you now find a horizontal scrolling set of options with a more precise slider for each, making adjustments more accurate.

In addition, the Google Photos editor gets a new section inspired by the editing tips the service provides, consisting of image-based recommendations and a more general enhancement feature, possibly replacing the old 'Auto' function, with these enhancements relying on machine learning.

For Pixel phone users only, there is a Portrait Light feature also based on machine learning, giving users more control over lighting in portrait photos, allowing them to choose the position of the light source, as well as adjust the brightness and exposure of an object in the photo. Portrait Light can also be applied to regular photos not taken in portrait mode.

Finally, all these features are being rolled out gradually to all Android users, except the last feature which, as noted, is exclusive to Pixel phones. If you haven't received it yet, wait a few days and it will arrive.
