Google renames NotebookLM app to Gemini Notebook, integrates it with Search and Gemini
Google announced it is renaming its AI-powered note-taking and research app NotebookLM to Gemini Notebook, aiming to strengthen its connection to the Gemini ecosystem while keeping it as a standalone app. It also revealed new features that will roll out to users in the coming weeks.
Google first revealed the app at Google I/O 2023 under the name Project Tailwind, later launching it as NotebookLM. The company believes the new name provides a clearer identity for users and strengthens the app's link to its popular Gemini assistant. It will also get a new logo featuring the distinctive blue-to-purple gradient of the service.
Broader integration with Google services
Google confirmed that Gemini Notebook will remain a standalone app focused on research and personal data file management, but it will gain deeper integration with the company's services.
Notebooks from Gemini Notebook are already available within the Gemini app for organizing conversations and collecting content. Google soon plans to also make them available within the 'AI Mode' in Search, allowing users to access and leverage notes directly while searching.
The company also announced expanding the rollout of Gemini 3.5 models and Antigravity technology, which began reaching Google AI Ultra subscribers last month, to soon include Google AI Pro subscribers on the web.
The update gives each notebook a secure cloud computer capable of writing and executing code directly, enabling complex data analyses based on user sources, in addition to providing new output formats and deeper analyses.
Google clarified that these features will be available to all Google AI Pro plan subscribers on the web in the coming weeks, and they are currently available to Google AI Ultra subscribers and Google Workspace customers.
Over the past years, Google has continued to develop the app by adding new tools to help users organize and analyze notes, including converting them into podcast-style audio files, narrated presentations, short clips similar to TikTok, and linking notebooks to the Gemini app.
Google noted that Gemini Notebook is currently used by over 30 million users, in addition to more than 600,000 organizations, indicating the app's widespread adoption in research, study, and work.
