The artificial intelligence model of sports analytics company Opta Analyst succeeded in predicting the 2026 World Cup champion, after Spain won the title by defeating Argentina 1-0 in the final, confirming the accuracy of the statistical model that had placed Spain at the top of the favorites before the tournament started.

The Opta supercomputer relied on more than 25,000 simulations of the tournament path, based on performance data, team rankings, recent results, opponents' strength, and probabilities for each match, before giving Spain the highest chance of winning the title at 16.1%.

Accurate prediction realized on the field

Although the 16.1% figure may seem low, it was the highest percentage among all participating teams, given the convergence of major powers and the expansion of the tournament to 48 teams for the first time, which distributed the chances of victory among a large number of competitors.

As the tournament progressed, the Opta model continued to update its predictions after each round, and Spain remained among the top contenders until the final, before the Spanish team secured the title, confirming the validity of the model's statistical predictions.

Why did the Opta model favor Spain?

The model attributed Spain's superiority to a set of factors, most notably balanced team performance, defensive strength, effective possession, as well as their results against major teams during the tournament.

Opta data showed that Spain had one of the best defensive lines in the World Cup, which was reflected in their journey to the title, culminating in the victory over Argentina in the final.

Opta's predictions are not based on guesswork, but on a mathematical model that analyzes millions of data points, including offensive and defensive performance, expected goals (xG), opponent strength, and player statistics, then runs thousands of simulations to calculate the probabilities of each possible scenario.

Even with the model's success in predicting the 2026 champion, Opta analysts emphasize that these predictions reflect statistical probabilities, not predetermined results, as football remains full of surprises. However, Spain's triumph this time gave the model one of its greatest successes in predicting major tournament outcomes.
