Microsoft fixes a bug in Windows 11 that consumes storage space on computers
Microsoft has released a new update for Windows 11 that addresses a bug causing a system file to consume massive amounts of storage space, reaching hundreds of gigabytes for some users.
The optional June 2026 update, numbered KB5095093, includes a fix that improves disk space usage for a file called CapabilityAccessManager.db-wal, which is installed by default and is related to app permission management.
A number of Windows 11 users have complained in recent months about the abnormal growth of this file; one user reported it reached about 500 GB on their device, while others recorded sizes between 12 and 200 GB, draining available storage space.
Why did the problem occur?
Microsoft has not revealed the direct cause of the issue, but reports suggested that the system may have been continuously logging repeated events related to app permission requests or privacy settings, such as location services, causing the file to gradually expand.
How to check for the problem?
The Storage section in Windows Settings will not reveal the source of the problem; it only displays the used space without identifying the file responsible for consumption.
To check for the bug, reports recommend using tools like TreeSize, WinDirStat, or WizTree, which display file and folder sizes in detail, allowing you to see if the CapabilityAccessManager.db-wal file has expanded unreasonably.
How to fix the problem?
Affected users can install the update by going to Settings, then Windows Update, selecting Advanced options, then clicking Check for optional updates, and then downloading and installing the optional June 2026 update (KB5095093) to resolve the issue.
