Key players in the music industry on Friday proposed a labeling mark for content created by generative artificial intelligence, hoping for widespread adoption, especially by music streaming platforms.

The initiative is led by the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI) and the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), along with the organization behind the Grammy Awards and a number of independent music organizations.

Two labels were proposed: The first, "AI-generated," applies to cases where AI was used "to create all or most of the creative elements of a musical piece," according to AFP.

This includes, according to a statement, music "entirely created by text prompts for AI," as well as songs where the "lead vocal performance" or a "key musical part" is produced by AI.

The second label, called "AI-assisted," is used for musical works "that involve substantial human contribution to the creative process," but where AI was used in some elements.

For a song to be classified in this category, rather than the "AI-generated" category, humans must have handled the main musical parts and any vocal performance.

The entities that developed these labels will seek to "apply them with digital music platforms, distributors, content aggregators, and standards bodies," according to the statement.

To date, the French platform Deezer is the only one that automatically classifies AI-generated music tracks.

At the end of April, Spotify launched a "Spotify Verified" label indicating that the artist or band is likely human and not AI-generated.
