More than 200 researchers and economists, including 15 Nobel laureates and researchers from OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google, called on governments and technology leaders to urgently establish policies and institutions to address the economic implications of artificial intelligence.
These experts and researchers issued a joint statement on Monday, warning that AI could bring about an economic transformation broader than the Industrial Revolution, but on a "much shorter" timescale, raising questions for workers, businesses, and public institutions.
The statement called for more research into the economic impacts of AI and for beginning to build the necessary policies and institutions to ensure society benefits from this technology while addressing potential risks, such as widespread job loss, according to Reuters.
Anton Korinek, a professor at the University of Virginia, said: 'Steam, electricity, and computer technologies gave societies decades to adapt. (But) AI may give us only a few years.'
He added: 'We cannot improvise our strategy and institutions in the midst of the transformation; waiting for certainty means arriving far too late.'
Korinek, who joined Anthropic's economic research team in March, organized this initiative with fellow economists Erik Brynjolfsson, Ajay Agrawal, and Tom Cunningham.
Among the signatories were Sarah Friar, CFO of OpenAI; Jeff Dean, Chief Scientist at Google DeepMind; Jack Clark, co-founder of Anthropic; and members of Anthropic's economic research team.
Also signing the statement were several Nobel laureates, including Michael Spence, Daron Acemoglu, and Simon Johnson.
