Xiaomi is preparing to launch the Redmi Note 17 Pro in the Chinese market on July 14, offering a free battery replacement program extending up to five years, aiming to extend phone lifespan and reduce electronic waste.

Xiaomi Group President Lu Weibing announced on the Chinese platform Weibo that customers who purchase the phone during the first batch of sales will receive the program's benefits without any additional fees.

According to the company, if battery health drops below 80% within the first four years of use, Xiaomi will replace the battery for free.

If that happens during the fifth year, the user will receive a free upgrade to a larger capacity battery instead of a replacement with a similar one.

This initiative is one of the longest battery support programs in the smartphone market, as most competing companies, such as Samsung and Google, only offer free battery replacement during the standard one-year warranty period, after which the user bears the replacement cost.

Xiaomi previously offered battery upgrade programs for some of its phones, such as the Xiaomi 13 series, but they were paid. The new program is free, although it is currently limited to devices sold in the first batch in the Chinese market, with the possibility of later offering it as a paid additional service for subsequent sales.

Xiaomi also confirmed that the Redmi Note 17 Pro will come with a massive 9000 mAh battery, supporting 67W wired charging, plus 22.5W wired reverse charging.

Leaks suggest the phone may be powered by a Snapdragon 6 Gen 5 processor, along with a 200MP main camera.

However, these features are still only for the Chinese market, as the global version of the phone is expected to come with a different battery capacity, and the free battery replacement program may remain exclusive to China until Xiaomi announces global launch details.
