OpenAI reveals Codex Micro.. Smart keyboard for programmers
OpenAI announced the launch of a new keyboard called Codex Micro, specially designed to work with its intelligent coding platform Codex, providing developers a faster way to control the functions of the AI-supported platform. The keyboard costs $230.
The Codex Micro is not a traditional keyboard; it has only 12 keys, plus a joystick and a rotary knob, and is designed to provide direct shortcuts for the most used tasks within Codex, such as activating voice dictation, accepting or rejecting edits, push-to-talk, and starting new conversations.
OpenAI equipped the keyboard with LED indicators on the keys to show the status of the programming agent and ongoing tasks, making it easier to navigate between different functions while working.
The company demonstrated the keyboard's capabilities in a video, using it to create a browser-based game with Codex. The joystick can be customized for quick access to key Codex platform functions, while the rotary knob adjusts the 'inference effort' level, which determines whether Codex will prioritize execution speed or output quality.
OpenAI developed the device in collaboration with the Canadian company Work Louder, which specializes in custom keyboards. The design appears to be based on the company's Creator Micro 2 and Frame Micro keyboards, as they share the same 12-key layout, joystick, and rotary knob.
OpenAI confirmed that the Codex Micro keyboard is designed to help developers enhance their Codex experience, and Work Louder notes that it is the first controller designed to work directly with an intelligent agent dedicated to programming.
The keyboard supports connectivity via Bluetooth or USB-C, works with Windows or Mac devices, allows reprogramming of all key functions, and comes with 32 additional keycaps for replacement at any time. The company said it will release the keyboard in limited quantities, meaning those interested may need to order early.
It is worth noting that the Codex Micro keyboard is OpenAI's first physical product. The company is currently working on several consumer-oriented physical products, including a smart speaker powered by its AI models, amid an ongoing legal battle with Apple, which accuses it of stealing trade secrets by recruiting former employees who were aware of its projects.
