Saudi Arabia Completes Global Initiative for E-Waste Regulation
Saudi Arabia announced the completion of its global initiative to develop e-waste management regulations, in cooperation with the International Telecommunication Union (ITU). The initiative included the Republic of Paraguay, the Republic of Rwanda, and the Republic of Zambia, aiming to lead international efforts toward comprehensive digital sustainability.
The initiative aims to promote the circular economy and implement innovative solutions to reduce e-waste. This announcement coincided with the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) in Geneva, with the participation of over 190 countries.
The initiative included the development of three national regulatory frameworks, in addition to issuing a guide documenting best practices in e-waste management. It also involved preparing studies to estimate costs and fees for electronic devices for the beneficiary countries.
More than 270 entities and 480 specialists from around the world participated in this initiative, reflecting the scale of international cooperation in this vital field.
Saudi Arabia has been working, since joining the ITU in 1949, to support the international community in shaping an inclusive and sustainable digital future. This is achieved by adopting regulatory innovations, supporting emerging technologies, and building human capacities, reaffirming its commitment to digital sustainability.
