Sony has announced that it will stop producing physical discs for all new PlayStation games starting January 2028, making future releases available exclusively through digital download via the PlayStation Store or other digital marketplaces.

In an official statement published on the PlayStation Blog, the company said the decision comes in response to changing player behavior, as the majority now prefer to buy and download games electronically rather than purchasing physical copies.

Sony confirmed that PlayStation games already released or scheduled for release on discs before January 2028 will not be affected by this decision.

This move represents a new step in the accelerating shift in the entertainment industry toward digital distribution, especially after similar transitions in music, movies, and personal computing in recent years.

This step allows Sony to reduce costs associated with production, packaging, and shipping, while giving consumers immediate access to games upon purchase.

Sony explained that games will still be available through retail stores, but all new releases after January 2028 will be digital only, offering players flexibility in choosing the platform from which they prefer to purchase games without relying on traditional discs.

The company concluded its statement by reaffirming its continued focus on developing innovative gaming experiences while offering players diverse options in how to acquire new games.
