Volkswagen begins production of its electric car ID 4
Volkswagen announced this week that the ID 4 has entered series production in Saxony, Germany.
The ID 4 is considered the first electric SUV produced by the automaker.
It was previously known as the ID Crozz when it was still a concept, and it is the second vehicle from Volkswagen's ID lineup of electric cars to be sold in the United States, China, and Europe.
Volkswagen sold the first car, called the ID 3, only in Europe.
Initial production of the ID 4 began at the company's Anting plant in China, while the automaker's Chattanooga facility will start production in 2022.
The German automaker will present a virtual full unveiling of the ID 4 at the end of September, and the first images of the ID 4 were leaked from China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology earlier this summer.
It is expected to achieve nearly 300 miles on a full charge, and it is built on the same modular EV platform that powers other Volkswagen ID vehicles, known as the MEB.
There will be all-wheel-drive and rear-wheel-drive configurations, with all-wheel drive being the version available at launch.
The battery is placed in the middle of the lower body to achieve a low center of gravity and improve driving dynamics.
The digital cockpit will operate using touchscreens and intuitive voice commands.
The launch of the ID 3 caused Volkswagen CEO Herbert Diess to lose his role in the brand in June due to some software glitches that delayed deliveries to customers.
It was also reported that Diess was removed from the CEO position due to problems with the launch of the new Golf and other missteps, such as a racist advertisement released earlier this year.
The ID electric lineup also includes concept versions of the ID Roomzz SUV, the ID Buggy dune buggy, and a revival of the ID Buzz microbus, for which the company has promised an alternative.
The ID vehicle family will not be the German company's first foray into battery-powered engines, as Volkswagen's Porsche division recently unveiled its first fully electric sports car called the Taycan.
The E-Tron, Audi's first battery-powered SUV owned by the Volkswagen Group, debuted in 2018.
These vehicles represent the spearhead of Volkswagen's efforts to dominate the emerging electric car market.
