The Saudi Geological Survey announced on Friday that an earthquake of magnitude 5.4 was recorded in the Arabian Sea.

The authority said on its account on the American platform X that the stations of the National Seismic Monitoring Network recorded the quake at 15:01:33 local time (12:01:33 GMT).

It added that the epicenter was located about 198 kilometers southwest of Salalah in Dhofar Governorate, southern Oman.

There were no immediate reports of casualties or material damage from the quake.

According to the Seismological Center at Sultan Qaboos University, seismic activity in the Arabian Sea is linked to the Owen Fracture Zone, a transform fault separating the Arabian and Indian plates, with moderate seismic activity in the region.

Some seismic activity is also concentrated near southern Oman in the Gulf of Aden, due to faults associated with the opening of the gulf and plate tectonic movements.
