20 Dead, Over 100 Missing in Boat Sinking in Central DR Congo
At least 20 people died and over 100 are missing after a wooden boat carrying students returning from exams and other passengers sank in Kasai province, central Democratic Republic of Congo. François Kabula, the administrative officer of Ilebo area, said rescue teams recovered 20 bodies yesterday and were able to rescue 80 people, noting that search operations for the missing are ongoing and facing difficulties. Local sources reported that the boat, which was carrying more than 200 passengers as well as goods, capsized at the confluence of the Kasai and Sankuru rivers during its journey between Ilebo and Sankuru, with overload believed to be the cause of the incident. The Democratic Republic of Congo frequently experiences boat sinking accidents due to overcrowding, poor safety standards, night navigation, and limited transport infrastructure in remote areas, resulting in hundreds of casualties every year.
