Trump Administration Subpoenas Journalists Over Reports on Qatar-Gifted Presidential Plane
CNN correspondent Kaitlan Collins reported that journalists from The New York Times who covered security concerns about the new presidential plane gifted by Qatar to U.S. President Donald Trump have been subpoenaed.
The Department of Justice issued these subpoenas to several New York Times reporters in an attempt to force them to testify before a grand jury next week.
This stems from what happened this week when President Trump was unable to return home on his new plane, a jumbo jet gifted by Qatar, from the NATO summit in Turkey. This was due to security concerns that the new plane does not have the same security capabilities as the older version of the presidential aircraft.
President Donald Trump took the old plane from Turkey to the United Kingdom, and from there he boarded his new plane to return to the United States.
Trump was very angry about the leak of the reason why he did not return directly from Turkey on the new presidential plane, and he felt very angry and embarrassed about the matter being made public. This led to a meeting with White House officials on Friday, including FBI Director Kash Patel, shortly before the subpoenas were announced. CNN's team spotted Kash Patel leaving the White House just before 7 p.m.
Now, The New York Times is vowing to challenge this unprecedented step by the Trump administration in court.
We have previously seen the Department of Justice issue subpoenas to journalists and then later withdraw them after a legal battle.
