Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharaa met Tuesday with his French counterpart Emmanuel Macron at the People's Palace in the capital Damascus, in the first official visit by a French president to Syria in years.

The Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA) reported that the talks between the two sides covered prospects for bilateral cooperation in various fields, as well as a review of developments in regional and international situations.

Macron had arrived in Damascus Monday at the head of a high-level delegation including investors and representatives of major French companies, in an indication of Paris's direction towards strengthening economic cooperation with Damascus in the coming period.
