(CNN)-- The US Army said it targeted about 140 Iranian military sites in its latest strikes, which were carried out early Sunday morning local time.

The US Central Command (CENTCOM) announced in a post on platform 'X', formerly Twitter, that the third round of strikes carried out this week has been completed, clarifying that the targets included Iranian missile and drone sites, naval capabilities, ammunition depots, communications networks, and coastal surveillance sites.

It added: "Over three nights of strikes this week, CENTCOM targeted more than 300 objectives, under the direction of the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, with the aim of undermining Iran's ability to attack civilian and commercial cargo ships that freely transit the Strait of Hormuz."

The US Central Command had earlier announced that the latest strikes came in response to an attack targeting a container ship that was crossing the Strait of Hormuz.

In contrast, the Iranian Revolutionary Guard said it fired a warning shot at a ship that was trying to cross the waterway through an unauthorized route.
