Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian said that any potential US use of force against Cuba would threaten global stability and peace.
This came during a daily press conference on Thursday in response to a question about reports that the US Department of Defense (Pentagon) is studying military options against Cuba 'in secret'.
Jian added: 'We are aware of this. The use or threat of force in international relations constitutes a serious violation of the UN Charter and endangers regional and international peace and stability. China strongly opposes this.'
He added that the consensus recently reached in the UN General Assembly on continuing to discuss the agenda item 'Necessity of ending the economic, commercial and financial embargo imposed by the United States of America against Cuba' reflects the level of international support that Havana enjoys.
He continued: 'The United States should immediately end its military threats against Cuba and all forms of blockade imposed on it. China will continue to support Cuba in protecting its national sovereignty and its rejection of foreign interference.'
The US network CBS News reported on Wednesday that the US Department of Defense is 'secretly' reviewing possible options and plans related to Cuba.
On April 13 last, Trump said that Washington would move from the Iranian file to the Cuba file, explaining that 'Cuba is a different story, it has been very badly managed for years, and after Iran we will look into this file.'
For his part, the Cuban president said regarding the possibility of a US invasion: 'If that happens, there will be conflict, there will be resistance, we will defend ourselves, and if we have to die, we will die.'
Trump had signed on January 30 last a decree imposing tariffs on all goods coming from countries that sell or supply oil to Cuba.
The White House then announced that this measure aims to protect US national security and foreign interests in the face of what it described as the 'harmful policies and actions' of the Cuban government.
