Romania announced on Saturday that it had shot down a drone that violated its airspace, the second such incident in two days.

The Romanian Defense Ministry said in a statement that radar monitoring systems detected at 08:22 local time a drone that illegally entered the country's airspace in a border area with Ukraine.

It added that two F-16 fighter jets from the Romanian Air Force intercepted the target and carried out standard identification and neutralization procedures.

It noted that the drone was safely shot down in an uninhabited area near the border line, and that ministry teams will conduct inspections at the crash site.

The statement added that developments in Romanian airspace are being continuously monitored and close contacts with allies are ongoing, indicating that additional information will be shared with the public as soon as it becomes available.

For his part, Romanian President Nicușor Dan announced in a post on his account on the American platform X that the drone was shot down 10 kilometers west of the Sfântu Gheorghe area.

Yesterday, Friday, another drone violated Romanian airspace and was also shot down by an F-16 fighter jet of the Romanian Air Force, according to official data.

A Russian drone had entered Romanian airspace on May 29 during Russian night attacks on Ukraine and fell on a residential building, injuring two people.
