Ukraine announces it faced one of Russia's largest ballistic missile attacks in the war
(CNN)-- Ukrainian authorities announced that Russia launched one of its largest ballistic missile attacks on Ukraine since the start of the war, overnight into Sunday morning.
The Ukrainian Air Force said Moscow launched a "combined large-scale strike against Ukraine using attack drones and various types of air- and ground-launched missiles," noting that the capital Kyiv was the main target.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said: "The enemy launched more than 40 missiles of various types - most of them targeting the capital - and 120 attack drones."
Andriy Sybiha, acting Minister of Foreign Affairs, said Russia launched "nearly 48" missiles that followed a ballistic trajectory, describing it as "the largest number of ballistic missiles since the start of the war."
The Air Force announced that air defenses managed to "shoot down or neutralize 126 targets, including 18 missiles and 108 drones."
According to emergency teams, one person was killed and 16 others were injured in Kyiv.
Earlier, local authorities announced that at least two residential buildings and a shopping center in the Ukrainian capital were hit by Russian strikes early Sunday local time.
Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko urged residents to stay in shelters, writing that several buildings in at least three districts of the city were shelled during the attack.
Klitschko wrote on Telegram: "In the Dniprovskyi district, a fire broke out in a shopping and entertainment center and a number of cars," adding that emergency teams were heading to the scenes.
CNN teams on the ground reported that continuous explosions could be heard from the city center over the past hour, and one noted a strong smell of smoke spreading across the city on Sunday morning.
