The second earthquake, which registered a magnitude of 7.5—the strongest in Venezuela in over a century—struck 39 seconds after an initial tremor of magnitude 7.2, turning entire high-rise residential complexes into piles of rubble. Rodríguez said that more than 19,000 displaced people are living in shelters. Authorities are avoiding discussing the missing, but the United Nations estimates their number could reach 50,000, while other estimates suggest around 10,000.
