US President Donald Trump on Sunday mourned his prominent ally, Republican Senator Lindsey Graham, describing him as "one of the greatest people" he had ever known, shortly after his death was announced.

Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform: "Senator Lindsey Graham, one of the greatest people I have ever known, has died! He was hardworking and a true American patriot. Everyone will miss him very much."

For his part, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and other senior officials offered condolences on the death of US Senator Lindsey Graham, saying they had lost a dear friend.

Netanyahu said in a statement: "Lindsey understood that Israel's security and America's security are inseparable."

He added: "Israel has lost one of its greatest friends, America has lost a great patriot, and I have lost a dear friend."

In separate posts on the X platform, Israeli President Isaac Herzog, Defense Minister Israel Katz, Foreign Minister Gideon Sa'ar, and former Prime Minister Naftali Bennett described Graham as a true friend of Israel and one of its strongest supporters.

Military and political career

Lindsey Graham was born on July 9, 1955, in the city of Seneca, South Carolina, and received his law degree before joining the US Air Force, where he served as a military lawyer and Air Force prosecutor in Europe between 1984 and 1988, then moved to private legal practice.

Graham entered politics in the 1990s, being elected to the South Carolina House of Representatives, then the US House of Representatives, before becoming a Senator in 2003, later emerging as one of the most prominent and influential Republican figures on foreign policy and defense issues.
