Periodic procedures

The Egyptian ministry also confirmed that sterilization and cleaning operations inside the archaeological site are carried out periodically by specialists at the Research and Maintenance Center affiliated with the Restoration and Projects Sector of the Supreme Council of Antiquities, to preserve the safety of the historic building.

Preventing recurrence

The ministry added that a comprehensive technical project is being implemented to prevent bats from entering the Sultan Al-Zahir Barquq complex again, by installing LED lighting fixtures, using specialized types of nets, along with ultrasonic bat-repelling devices.

Mamluk monument

The Sultan Al-Zahir Barquq complex and its famous dome are among the most prominent archaeological landmarks in historic Cairo, as it was built in the Islamic Mamluk style, and includes a mosque, a school, a khanqah, and a funerary dome.

The complex was commissioned by Sultan Al-Zahir Saif al-Din Barquq, founder of the second Mamluk state, during the period from 1384 to 1386 AD, later becoming one of the prominent architectural landmarks in the Al-Muizz Street area.
