Axios: New 'US-Iranian' Negotiations Expected in Switzerland Next Week
Attention is turning to the path of de-escalation between the United States and Iran, after a source told Axios on Friday that he expects a new round of negotiations between the two sides next week in Switzerland, while Egypt and Qatar called for a return to the negotiating table and implementation of the memorandum of understanding signed in June to contain the escalation and enhance regional stability.
According to a source who spoke to Axios, Switzerland is expected to host a new round of negotiations between the United States and Iran next week, amid recent developments that saw an exchange of attacks between the two sides in recent days.
This coincided with an Egyptian-Qatari diplomatic move, as Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty held a phone call with his Qatari counterpart Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani, during which they discussed developments in the region and ways to contain the escalation.
The Egyptian Foreign Ministry said in a statement that the two ministers stressed during the call 'the importance of containing tensions and preventing the expansion of the conflict.'
The statement added that the two ministers urged 'all parties to prioritize the language of diplomacy and dialogue and return to the negotiating table to work on implementing the memorandum of understanding' signed between the United States and Iran in June, 'as a prelude to reaching a final agreement between the two sides that contributes to de-escalation and enhances regional security and stability.'
For its part, the Qatari Foreign Ministry reported that Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani stressed 'the need for all parties to commit to dialogue and diplomacy, and to implement what was agreed upon within the framework of the memorandum of understanding.'
The Qatari Foreign Ministry added that this includes 'ensuring freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz, to maintain the security of the region, preserve the gains achieved, and enhance regional stability.'
These developments came in conjunction with a Qatari delegation's visit to Iran, following the tensions in the Strait of Hormuz in recent days, which included Doha's accusation of Tehran targeting a tanker belonging to it, along with an exchange of strikes between the United States and the Islamic Republic of Iran.
