French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot announced on Monday that Iranian authorities detained two diplomatic staff members of the French embassy in Tehran for hours.

Barrot said in a post on the American platform 'X' that Iranian security forces stopped two employees of the French embassy in Tehran on Sunday evening 'without justification,' in a move he said 'violates diplomatic immunity.'

He added that the French employees were subjected to an 'extremely serious intimidation operation,' noting that they were released after being interrogated for hours and returned to the embassy.

Barrot accused Iranian authorities of being behind what he described as a 'shocking assault' on the French diplomats, considering that it came 'because of their support for civil society programs that support Iranian artists and scientists.'

He also explained that he had a phone call with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, telling him that the 'unacceptable assault' on French embassy staff 'will not go without consequences.'

There was no immediate comment from the Iranian side on what the French minister said.
